The GORE-TEX membrane consists of an ultra thin layer of expanded polytetrafluoroethylene. It has over 1,400 million pores per cm2. It's breathable and sweat can exit the membrane easily because the pores are 700 times larger than a water vapour molecule. It's also waterproof because the pores of the membrane stop water getting in by being 20,000 times smaller than a drop of water. And it's windproof because the mesh structure of the membrane traps wind and stops it coming into contact with the skin.
