Etixx Muscle Nutrition glutamine is the most abundant free amino acid in human plasma and muscle cells. It is a semi-essential amino acid, which means that the body manufactures glutamine itself (mainly in muscle, liver, adipose tissue and brain), but in certain circumstances (heavy physical exertion, recovery) exogenous glutamine can be beneficial. It is also present in foods such as meat, poultry, fish, eggs, milk, pulses, etc.
Glutamine has numerous functions in the body: Protein synthesis, muscle building, glycogen synthesis, immune function, intestinal barrier function, acid-base balance, etc.
Amino acids, such as glutamine, are the building blocks of protein and contribute to the growth and maintenance of muscle mass. Glutamine supplies the muscles with nitrogen, among other things, and thus contributes to maintaining the nitrogen balance. This is beneficial in reducing muscle breakdown, promoting muscle recovery and protein synthesis.
Athletes, especially endurance athletes or those who do very intense exercise, place high demands on their bodies. Prolonged and very intense exercise is known to be associated with decreased intramuscular and plasma glutamine concentrations, which would be detrimental to immune function. Studies show, for example, that glutamine supplementation would reduce the incidence of disease in endurance athletes.
