The history of the black jersey, awarded between 1946 and 1951, was originally about willpower and the ability not to give up in the face of adversity. Originally awarded as a consolation prize, this jersey became a coveted trophy for some riders, due to the enthusiasm generated among the fans by the figure of the last classified rider. This is the case of Luigi Malabrocca and Sante Carollo, two Italian cyclists who decided to compete for last place by losing time during the stages. Malabrocca even stopped to eat with the customers in the bars along the stage.
