Launched in the early 1970s and improved over the years, Lifa is a hydrophobic fibre that provides insulation and moisture control, removing it from the skin and transporting it to the surface of the fabric, where it evaporates. Lifa fibres are used in the first layer of the membrane of base layer articles, i. e. the layer closest to the skin. This, made of Merino wool, is combined with an additional layer of hydrophilic (moisture-absorbing) material, and so sweat is removed from the skin and transported to the second layer, where it is absorbed. This allows the wearer to stay warm, dry and comfortable. Lifa fabric is ultra-lightweight.
