Do you want to know more about kid’s bikes?

Kids bikes are specifically designed to adapt to the needs of the littlest cyclers. At early ages, bikes contribute not only to fun and physical exercise, but also to ensuring correct psychomotor development of the child, stimulating their sense of balance and coordination.

In order for your child to get the most out of their bike, you should take some factors into account.

Firstly, it is not good to force children to use a two-wheeled bike until they are ready, normally when they are around five or six years old. It is important to assess the kid’s ability and desire to learn to ride a bike before putting one in their hands.

To make sure the bike is being used safely, an adult must always supervise small children when riding their bike, and roads or areas where cars and other vehicles drive should be avoided.

The correct bike size must be chosen for the child’s size and level of psychomotor development. Buying a bigger bike so that it will last longer for example, can make it difficult for the child to control it, as it may make them feel more insecure, and even cause serious injuries.

How to know the correct size for your child.

- Your toes must touch the ground when you are sitting on the saddle.

- Your feet must be flat on the ground when off the saddle, with about 2-3 cm between your crotch and the top tube.

Other safety tips

- Ensure that the child can manoeuvre comfortably with the brakes and has enough strength to stop the bike without losing contact with the handlebar.

- It is important for children to get used to wearing a helmet correctly whenever they ride a bicycle and have a helmet approved for their size.

- The handlebar grips should be soft, so as not to damage the child’s skin or cause irritation and the brakes must be effective to give the necessary safety when performing manoeuvres.

- When riding a bike, it is important to be visible. Bicycle lights or reflectives on the pedals and wheels should be used in addition to the reflective elements the bikes already come with. Children should always wear a reflective vest or bright and colourful clothing when on their bikes.

Kids bike models

- Balance bikes without pedals for learning are suitable for children between 2 and 4 years old. Their main advantage is that once they know how to ride this type of vehicle, they can move straight on to using conventional 2-wheel bicycles, without having to use stabilisers.

- Bikes with 16" wheels (40.6 cm) are suitable for children from 4 to 7 years.

- Bikes with 20" wheels (50.8 cm) are suitable for children from 5 to 10 years.

- Bikes with 24" wheels (61 cm) are suitable for children from 8 to 14 years.

In addition to age, all this information is also subject to other factors, such as the height and dimensions of the child’s crotch, as well as their level of psychomotor development.
