Marmot has its beginnings in 1971 when two students from the University of California, Eric Reynolds and Dave Huntley, were at the Juneau Ice Field in Alaska for a Glaciology project. That's where they came up with the idea of ??creating "Marmot". The name refers to a group of large and highly social squirrels that live in mountainous areas.

In the winter of 1974 Eric and Dave joined Tom Boyce in Grand Junction, with whom they had coincided in the ascent of the Grand Teton in Wyomin. They rented an old building near the center of the city and opened their first store "Marmot Mountain Works".

That fall, in Peru, Tom met the famous filmmaker Mike Hoover, who weeks later contacted him on behalf of 20th Century Fox to ask them for 108 jackets for a film they were filming.

In 1976, a meeting would change the future of Marmot when Eric met Joe Tanner of WL Gore & Associates. Eric was one of the first in the United States to see a new manufacturing concept with Gore-Tex. They made a pair of sleeping bags with this fabric and the two creators of the brand spent seven nights in a commercial compartment of frozen meat comparing the functionality of Gore-Tex. From that moment, they changed their line with Gore-Tex fabrications. Today, Marmot is the oldest customer of WL Gore in the outdoor market in the world.
