It is a rescue system in the event of an avalanche that allows victims to be located thanks to a radar. It consists of two parts: the radar detector used by rescue teams, and passive reflectors which do not emit a signal and are incorporated in some anoraks, Trousers, helmets and even boots. The reflector consists of a small electronic transponder weighing just four grams with a thin copper antenna and a diode that bounces the detector signal and doubles the frequency. It is covered with a protective rubber outer foil which gives it its familiar elongated lozenge shape. It is virtually indestructible. The reflector does not emit a signal and therefore does not require a power source. - GORE-TEX The GORE-TEX membrane consists of an ultra-thin layer of expanded polytetrafluoroethylene. It contains more than 1.4 billion pores per cm2. It is breathable as sweat passes through the membrane easily because the pores are 700 times larger than a molecule of water vapour. It is also waterproof because the microscopic pores of the membrane prevent the passage of water as they are 20,000 times smaller than a drop of water. And it is windproof because the reticulated structure of the membrane traps the wind and prevents it from coming into contact with the skin.
