Speedo was founded in 1914 under the trade name Fortitude, which had been taken from the MacRae clan crest and motto. It was not until 1928 that the now world famous brand name would be established. Speedo started the 21st century in style, launching the revolutionary FASTSKIN swimsuit. This award-winning design, based on shark skin, was enthusiastically received by swimmers such as Grant Hackett, Michael Klim, Inge de Bruijn and Lenny Krayzelburg. At the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, 83% of the medals and 13 of the 15 world records that were won were won by swimmers wearing the swimsuit. In 2004 Speedo launched FASTSKIN FSII, an evolution of FASTSKIN that reduces passive resistance up to 4%. At the Athens Olympics Michael Phelps made history with a FASTSKIN FSII swimsuit by becoming the first swimmer in history to get 8 metals. In 2007 the legacy continued with the launch of Fastskin FS-PRO, the fastest and most impressive lightweight swimsuit on the market. 21 world records were beaten in 6 months. And in 2008, the 80th anniversary since the creation of Speedo, the brand launched LZR Racer, the swimsuit with the greatest technical advances in the world. The Olympic Games in Beijing were an unprecedented success for Speedo and the LZR Racer, since 92% of the swimming medals were won by athletes competing in this revolutionary swimsuit. The swimmer Michael Phelps, sponsored by Speedo, was the star of the Games getting the best record of all time to achieve gold in all of the 8 events in which he participated.
