Timberland was founded in 1978 in Massachusetts when the Swartz family decided to change the name of their company Abington Shoe Company. That same year, the company manufactured their first informal shoe sewn by hand and two years later it already had made a great impact on foreign markets. By the 90s, Timberland had already introduced female garments in their collection and developed their first Mukluk boot used by the official mushers (runners) of the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race. In that same decade, the brand also launched exclusive clothes in waterproof leather, a line of accessories and an exclusive collection for children. In accordance with their philosophy, in 1993 the brand signed a set of ethical rules introduced by the Coalition for Environmentally Responsible Economies (CERES) to seal their commitment to the environment and production quality. In 2001, Timberland announced their first collaboration between NASCAR and the Timberland PRO line of professional boots. This was the first time that the company ventured beyond their traditional positioning as a company dedicated to outdoor life, in order to respond to the specific needs and demands of the consumer of the sub-brand Timberland PRO. Today, Timberland is known for designing, manufacturing, marketing, distributing and selling high quality footwear, clothing and accessories for men, women and children, as well as a line of footwear and professional clothing. In addition, after all these years, the brand has succeeded in becoming a benchmark in the outdoor world after being named Outdoor Industry Business Innovator by the Industry Association for outdoor activities in 2000.
