Bike wheels are made of a metal ring on top of which the tyres, a central hub and a set of spokes which connect the rim to the hub are mounted. The tyres are normally made of rubber with an inner air chamber.

Depending on the number of spokes the wheel has, it will be lighter or heavier. The lighter the wheel, the faster they will spin and the greater the acceleration. Road bikes generally seek greater speed and so they use lighter and slimmer wheels with a thinner tyre than normal bikes, whereas mountain bikes have to withstand heavy impact on uneven ground and so their wheels are thicker, heavier and have fatter tyres.

There is a wide variety of bike wheels, which depending on the sport they are used for and the how often, a specific type will be recommended for you. There are economical rims for cyclists who do not cycle very often and other more expensive wheels for people who use their bikes on a daily basis.
