Yamaha invented the world's first electrically-assisted bicycle (PAS) in 1993. Since then, we have been constantly innovating to offer the most user-friendly electric power assistance systems.

In 1989 Yamaha created the first prototype. In 1993 the first sales of the bike began. The concept of an electrically assisted bicycle would later spread around the world.

In 1995 a detachable nickel-cadmium battery was adopted along with a new charger with a recharge charging function.

In 1999 the Intelligent Flexible Energy System (IFES) was developed. This enabled the exchange of data between the battery, charger and controller.

In 2003 a lightweight and compact centre-mounted drive unit with efficient direct chain assistance was developed. The non-contact torque sensor was developed to lighten pedalling when the battery is empty.

At2008 along with the introduction of the Brace model, Yamaha reached one million bikes sold. The creation of the Brace model was a response to consumers asking for a sportier recreational bike with Yamaha PAS technology.

In 2013 the Triple Sensor System was introduced to the new PWseries, providing a smoother, more enjoyable ride. The increased precision of the assistance control results in the most "natural and organic" pedal feel available in ebike technology today.

In 2015, the new Concept YPJ-R lightweight road bike was introduced in Japan.

In 2016 along with the introduction of the YPJ-C model in Japan, Yamaha reached 2 million bikes sold.
