The pair of Zipp 404 Firecrest wheels for tubulars have the Firecrest aerodynamic profile. It is the first deep profile carbon tubular design to offer the incredible aerodynamic properties, ride quality, strength and handling of a wider rim body. It features the 77/177D hub which combined with Zipp's Firecrest technology offers everything you are looking for in a road wheel. With greater lateral and torsional rigidity; and reduced weight thanks to the alignment of the Sapim CX Sprint spokes. In addition, ZIPP has eliminated the preload adjusting nuts of the bearings that required so much maintenance. By controlling the airflow around the rear half of the wheel, the 404 Firecrest is 9 seconds faster than its predecessor, the 404, over a distance of 40 km with a moderate wind angle of 10 degrees. With greater angles, the improvements are even more dramatic in terms of speed and stability. This is because Firecrest moves the center of pressure closer to the steering shaft, so side winds exert less lateral force on the wheel. The result is a higher maximum speed. With a wider rim, the resin system and manufacturing process increases lateral rigidity in sprints and also offers good vertical absorption for greater control, comfort and durability on surfaces. Firecrest technology, with rims that maintain a nearly constant width almost all the way to the base of the spokes, is the first aerodynamic profile that effectively controls airflow around the rear half of the wheel. Firecrest wheels offer stable and predictable handling at every wind angle by moving the pressure centre to its optimum location near the steering axle.
